Special Programs

Selected List of Programs Offered to Students:
·         Our Gifted and Talented Program (GATE) includes an after-school programs (computer, science, robotics, etc.), assemblies, District field trips, and projects.  
·         Our Math and Music program (MIND- Music Intelligence Neural Development) for 2nd and 3rd graders includes instruction in piano keyboarding and specialized math games to increase math skills by developing spatial temporal reasoning.
·         Our Leadership Club provides leadership opportunities for upper grade students.
·         Partners in Play (PIP) program assists qualifying K-3 students in adjusting to school.
·         Fourth graders participate in I.D. – (Important Decisions) for Success, a program provided through Supervisor Don Knabe’s office, to increase students’ confidence and decision making skills in regards to their personal goals and lifestyle choices.
·         Our sixth graders have the opportunity to attend Outdoor Science School for a week in the mountains.
·         Before and after school tutoring is offered as available for struggling students.
·         The 21st Century Grant after-school program assists students with homework and provides extracurricular activities.
·         Morning Break Club for parents focuses on helping parents to help their children.  Parents learn about the school, community resources and parenting.
·         Parents play an important role in our school by volunteering in the classroom, working with our PTA, which provides equipment, field trips, and activities for our youngsters, and participating in decision-making through our School Site Council. Parent education is also provided at special meetings.
·         Our Healthy Start Grant Community Liaison has assisted many families with school and community resources for medical, clothing and counseling needs.
·         Our Community of Caring efforts focus on the five tenets of this program: Respect, Caring, Responsibility, Trust, and Family. Community of Caring activities include student assemblies, community service projects, school beautification and a school-wide discipline program that encourages staff to interact with students in respectful and empowering ways.
·         Ongoing professional development opportunities are provided for staff to keep abreast of current research in effective strategies and practices. Teachers work collaboratively to continually improve their craft. Training has included: Thinking Maps which are specific graphic organizers based on brain research to organize and use information, Write from the Beginning (based on Thinking Maps), reading comprehension, ELD strategies, curriculum calibration and direct explicit instruction through Dataworks, training in new adoptions (math, science, social studies), teaching through inquiry, and International Baccalaureate training for the elementary years. Staff also attend outside workshops during the year.
