Almost a year after he ended his tenure at Rowland Unified School District, David M. Malkin will return to witness a permanent and tangible sign of his service there.
District officials, local dignitaries and community members will gather at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, to rename the district’s Family Resource Center in his honor.
Malkin was elected president of the 20-school district Board of Education in 2015. His expertise as a licensed clinical social worker informed his championing health and wellness student initiatives as well as his support for universal free breakfast and lunch for all students. Malkin increased the number of counselors and social workers across the district, which serves approximately 11,500 students and more than 5,000 adult students. He retired in November 2024.

“It has been an honor to serve the Rowland Unified School district students and families and this greater community,” Malkin said. “RUSD educates and works with a dynamic and diverse student population. The Family Resource Center is a necessary and critical component to help the underserved students break barriers and achieve their goals. The Family Resource Center provides necessary services that may otherwise be inaccessible. I am humbled to have my name associated with the FRC.”
Alejandro Flores, superintendent of the Rowland Unified School District, said Malkin and his family continue to serve students and their families even in his retirement.
“There are few community members who have made such an impact on the lives of the students and families of Rowland Unified than retired board member David M. Malkin,” Flores said. “His heart, compassion, and sincere dedication to every child is why the renaming of our Family Resource Center in his honor was the perfect way to celebrate his legacy.”
Community groups set to recognize Malkin at the renaming ceremony include the Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council, Rowland Heights Kiwanis Club, Rowland Council PTA and the Friends of the Family Resource Center.
Representatives from the offices of Sen. Bob Archuleta, D-Pico Rivera and Supervisor Hilda Solis are also scheduled to attend. Band and orchestra students from Nogales and Rowland high schools will perform.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Malkin was instrumental with making sure free COVID testing was offered daily at the district office for families and staff, providing student support hotlines and the largest deployment of technology devices in the district’s history for remote learning instruction. Malkin also led the push for the expansion of Career Technical Education (CTE) opportunities for students.
The David M. Malkin Family Resource Center offers a variety of no-cost and low-cost programs and services to children, youth and families, serving those experiencing homelessness or hardship.
The district serves the communities of Rowland Heights, Walnut, La Puente, City of Industry, and West Covina. It also has more than 5,000 adult students at Rowland Adult & Community Education.
